FORT WAYNE, IN — February 17 — The first year of The Kurt Marquart Fund for Theological Education in Haiti has met with overwhelmingly positive results and support. The fund, since its initial inception February 14, 2007, raised a total of $51,038 during 2007. This is a momentous milestone in that it assures that The Marquart Fund will be around for many years to come to assist in the theological training of men for the ministry in Haiti.
As stated in a previous news release, we have begun our supply of theological materials to the ELCH (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Haiti). In November of 2007 we coordinated a shipment of multiple back issues in French of GOOD NEWS magazine. In addition, the first annual distribution of monies from the Marquart Fund is going to the purchase and shipment of 100 French titles of Lutheran theological books such as Luther’s Works for their soon to be recognize official seminary.
For 2008 the Marquart Fund has set a goal of raising an additional $75,000 in order that we might increase our efforts and support of the ELCH. Together we can bring the light of Christ to a country in the grips of sin, death and the devil.
The 2007 graduating class of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana thank and praise God for his work and provision in this effort. We would also like to thank all those who have richly supported this mission endeavor. We look forward to your continued support and the expansion of support for this Gospel outreach.
The Kurt Marquart Fund was formed by the Concordia Theological Seminary class of 2007 in honor of The Reverend Doctor Kurt Marquart, pastor, professor and confessor of the faith, who was taken to be with his Lord Jesus Christ in 2006. The fund will provide material assistance to The Evangelical Lutheran Church if Haiti in the form of books, capital, underwriting of travel, and in other areas that are central to the theological education and training of Lutheran pastors in Haiti, and is established as a perpetual endowment. The Kurt Marquart Fund anticipates making its first disbursements to support the fund’s objectives in the first quarter of 2008.
“We give thanks to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ that he has continued to bless this effort of the seminary’s class of 2007 by graciously providing the necessary funds to make a perpetual fund possible,” said Perry Copus, the fund’s Chairman and a member of the seminary class. “This was our Lord’s initiative and activity from the start, and we are certain that he will accomplish his will by means of it. We commend this fund to Christ’s Church as a viable means of supporting the cause of confessional Lutheranism in Haiti.”
