KMF Volunteer Opportunities

Last Updated on Wednesday, 17 November 2010 11:25 Written by Administrator Wednesday, 17 November 2010 11:18

Would you like to share your time to help those in desparate need? By God's grace and favor, we are given a context and opportunity to be instruments of his love for our neighbors. Below are listed several opportunities for volunteerism in KMF. Some of these could be nearly full-time work! But, certainly, some of these roles could effectively receive whatever time you have to give. If you have skills in one or more of these areas, and have even 10 hours per month to give for the Church in Haiti, we would like to talk with you.

There are no paid staff at KMF - we are all volunteers. Current KMF volunteers are laity and clergy, and are located all over the USA and in Haiti. We have a conference bridge service for voice calls-you don't have to live in a particular geography to volunteer. If you are moved to help us to help the Lutherans in Haiti, contact us now!

Technical

Database Administrator

Will develop and maintain a MySQL database with web front-end for distributed access. The database will contain our mailing lists for direct marketing, donor records, etc., and will be fully secured. The volunteer(s) tackling this project should have applicable education/experience in database schema and design, efficiency considerations, and sufficient front-end experience to implement simple forms and interface components to perform data entry, lookups, etc.

Webmaster

This role is responsible for the maintenance of new web sites for KMF and for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti, in conjunction with the Designer and Copy Writer. Webmaster should have experience implementing and managing a Joomla! site (1.5.x), using web hosting control panels, managing E-mail accounts and forwarders, registering and maintaining domains, and integration of common web technologies, languages and protocols such as SSL, MySQL, PHP, DHTML, CSS, etc. Some basic knowledge of integrating front-end technologies with database-driven back-end applications will be very helpful.

Writing and Design

Print Designer

The print designer should have the ability to develop digital materials for print and for digital presentations around provided content using industry-standard tools, preferably Adobe and/or Corel (for print) and Microsoft Powerpoint. The current print materials were produced using the CorelDraw Graphics Suite. Designer will ideally be familiar with the process and requirements for ordering printed materials from a commercial printer.

Copy Writer

Will write copy for press releases, print collateral, and the web site, and will edit materials provided by others. This volunteer may also write and conduct interviews or perform other tasks with writing as a central element.

Promotion

Speaker

Speakers are people who are willing to come up to speed on the needs of the Church in Haiti, and use provided presentation materials to make presentations on behalf of KMF and ELCH. Although laypersons and retired clergy may have more speaking opportunities, since many congregations will allow a missions speaker to present on Sunday morning, we still want to hear from clergy with active Sunday morning, congregational roles--who knows when you might have an opportunity to present at a circuit meeting or in another weekday context? Please note that we will teach Speakers everything we know about the Church in Haiti so that they will be prepared, confident, and full of good information.

Direct Promotion Facilitator

This role will handle mail merges, label printing, ordering commercially-printed materials, and facilitating the cost-effective division of labor for direct marketing mailings. KMF has conducted approximately one large-scale mailing per year to-date, but may increase the frequency fourfold in the coming months. Mailings have ranged in size from 2300 to 9500 pieces, and have been stuffed and posted by volunteers. Facilitator should be able to process a mail merge to labels using Microsoft Word or similar, given a suitable mailing list.

Sponsorships Facilitator

A key donor development tool that will be implemented by KMF in 2010 is the sponsorship model, where some number of sponsors are recruited for a defined project in Haiti, at a predetermined cost and for a fixed time. The facilitator will match potential donors to sponsorship opportunities and facilitate communication between the donor(s) and the sponsored entity - a Lutheran congregation, shcool, seminary, pastor, seminarian, orphanage, etc. KMF's role will be to act as a trusted intermediary in bringin a relationship together, and will encourage direct contact and affinity. As the number of facilitated sponsorships escalates, this role could require more than one volunteer.

Financial and Compliance

Legal and Compliance

This role will be filled by a volunteer with a legal and tax background, and will advise the board in all legal and complaince matters, including ongoing requirements of 501(c)3 public charities, filing requirements, and the like.

Investments

Will manage, under the supervision of the Board of Directors, the prudent investment of the two perpetual endowments for an entity-appropriate balance of risk and return on investment.

Accounting

Ideally, the volunteer for this role will have some experience with generally accepted accounting principles for nonprofit, public charities. The volunteer will produce monthly balance sheets and income statements for KMF, and quarterly statements for the two endowments, and will provide basic audit support. KMF is an uncomplicated entity, so the time commitment, though regular, should be modest.

Endowment Development

In collaboration with other volunteers, this volunteer will develop and execute plans and materials to highlight the two permanent KMF endowments to suitable organizations and high-net-worth individuals.

Economic Development

This role will seek to define and establish long-term income streams for the ELCH and her seminary, including the establishment of Haitian-run, indigenous businesses in Haiti. These activities could include the specification and import of items made in Haiti to the USA for sale to American Lutherans as items whose purchase benefits the Church in Haiti. This role will necessitate periodic travel to Haiti.
